Every gardener needs basic garden tools to help get through the gardening grind. There are so many different types of basic garden tools that it can be difficult to know where to begin. When you’re starting out, you want to buy only the tools you need and as many as you can afford. Eventually, as you gain more experience, you can expand your garden area and add some other tools like a digging fork and a wheelbarrow.
You can’t go wrong with a spade. It’s one of the basic garden tools everyone should own and it’s a great gift for any new gardener. If you’re primarily focusing on container gardening, you’ll probably mostly be using the hand held variety of spades. But if you’re turning a big portion of your garden into your very own vegetable garden, you’ll want to have a broader selection of gardening tools including some really nice power tools.
A shovel is one of the most important basic garden tools you can invest in. You can buy a basic garden shovel at a home center or a hardware store for as little as twenty dollars. It’s not a shovel that you use only once and then toss in the garbage. It is useful time again as you dig up dirt, weed and plant flowers. A good quality garden shovel has a rubber shaft that grips the ground and prevents it from sliding or slipping.
Of course, a hedge trimmer is a must for any gardener. The right hedge trimmer is a versatile tool that can be used to trim bushes, prune trees, pick up weeds, etc. Some cool new tools include the cordless electric hedge trimmer and the cordless grass trimmer. In addition, many cordless electric lawn mowers come with attachments such as the chain drive lawn mower. While a gas powered tool may be more readily available to some gardeners, it is still cool to own a cool tool that uses natural gas or coal.
When shopping for an assortment of garden tools, consider the size and shape of your plants. Some basic garden tools are designed specifically for certain plant varieties. The shape of a plant determines the kind of tool to get. For instance, a garden fork is best for digging up small, compacted soil. A rounded fork is perfect for digging up tough, thick soil.
A quality set of potting soil and potting media will make the difference between healthy flower beds and unhealthy, dark, patchy grounds. Gardening pots need to be sturdy and leak proof for good drainage. A good set of potting soil mixtures will not only look great but also provide healthy soil for your plants. A basic garden tool set should be able to handle a lot of basic garden chores like weeding, planting and harvesting flowers, vegetables and fruit.
